The West-Facing Window Problem in Alabama Homes
Why west windows drive so much of a Tuscaloosa cooling bill, what low-SHGC glass does about it, and how to prioritize a partial window budget.
Almost every Tuscaloosa house has one room nobody wants to be in between three and seven in the afternoon. It is usually on the west side, and its windows are the reason.
Why west is the worst exposure
Two factors compound. First, timing: the west side takes direct sun during the hottest part of the day, when the house has already been absorbing heat for hours and the air conditioner is working hardest. Second, angle: afternoon sun sits low in the sky, which means it strikes a vertical window nearly head-on rather than glancing off it. A roof overhang that shades a south window at midday does nothing against low western sun.
South-facing windows get more total annual sun but at higher angles and cooler times of day. North faces gain almost none. West is the problem exposure, and southwest is close behind.
What the glass can do about it
The specification that addresses this is Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, the fraction of the sun’s heat that passes through the glass. Lower is better in a cooling climate, and a target around 0.25 or below is appropriate for exposed walls in Tuscaloosa. Compare that with a single-pane aluminum window, which does essentially nothing to stop solar gain, and the difference in an afternoon is something you feel rather than infer.
The Low-E coating is what accomplishes it, reflecting infrared energy while letting visible light through, so the room stays bright without the heat. Prioritizing a partial budget
Few homeowners replace every window at once, and exposure gives a rational order:
- West-facing windows. Highest heat gain per square foot of glass, biggest comfort change.
- Southwest and large south-facing windows, particularly unshaded ones.
- Any remaining single-pane windows, regardless of orientation, since the starting point is so poor.
- East-facing, which take morning sun that the house handles better.
- North-facing last. They gain the least and return the least.

What glass will not fix
Worth saying plainly: windows are one part of a comfort problem. If the attic is under-insulated or the ducts leak into a hot crawl space, those often return more per dollar than glazing does.
Exterior shading also still works. Trees on the west side, awnings, and even well-placed shrubs reduce solar load before it reaches the glass, and they cost far less than windows. The best result usually combines better glass with something blocking the sun outside it.
